This list is great! Gave me some good ideas!

January is a cold and dreary month in Ohio, but I made the most of it. I saved some money while having a good time along the way! Hopefully, my ideas will give you some ideas on how to save money. Here are some ways I saved money in January:

5 Ways I Saved Money in January

1. Cooked at Home

After all the good foods of the holidays, my family was definitely ready to return to regular home cooked meals. We did our best to reel in the eating out and do more cooking at home. Not only is it better on our pocketbooks, but it’s good for our waistlines too.

2. Shopped in Bulk at Costco

As I discussed in my post about the best generic toilet paper, I’ve been shopping at Costco more often. Wholesale clubs are not always the best deal, but many items can be found for great prices there. Some of my favorite things to buy inexpensively at wholesale clubs are roast chickens, frozen vegetables, eggs, and laundry detergent.

3. Made Some Freezer Meals

Many winter comfort foods make great freezer meals. While I didn’t participate in a freezer meal swap this year, I cooked some meals in large batches to have leftovers for the freezer. This month, I made chili and chicken soup.

4. Used CFL and LED Lightbulbs

The darkness of January means that I used my lights more often. A few years ago, we replaced all the incandescent lightbulbs in our house with CFL and LED bulbs. They not only save money, but now I save time by not replacing bulbs very often. I used to feel like I was buying light bulbs with every grocery trip. Now I haven’t bought any bulbs in years. I especially love the LED trim kits that we used in our recessed ceiling lights. The ones we have are similar to these and they’re much less expensive today than they were a few years ago!

5. Went on a Getaway to a State Park

My husband and I have a tradition of taking a romantic getaway weekend in January. It’s a great time to reconnect with each other, in the stillness of winter. We always try to make it an inexpensive trip, as the point is just to spend time with each other. This year, we spent the weekend in a cabin at a state park. The cabins are lovely and freshly remodeled, but only cost $65/night in the winter! Because it had a fully equipped kitchen, it was easy to take along some easy meals, which also saved money. We spent the weekend reading, relaxing, watching movies, and just enjoying each other’s company. As a way to work on our marriage, we also read this helpful book together. It’s a little cheesy, but I’d definitely recommend it to any couple. I feel it has helped our communication.
